Fort Apache started their summer programme – “Get back to nature” with a visit from the Eden play team from Cornwall. The idea behind this session was to help design how the space at Fort Apache could be used, if you had different loose parts!! .. With nets and ladders, tarpaulins, sheets and lots more the space was magically transformed by the children and young people (with a bit of help from the play workers), lunch was cooked over a campfire – a curry made using proper spices, and fresh veg!) .. Nobody wanted to go home .. (click here to find out what happened…)
Fort Apache is an open access adventure playground in the heart of Torquay. It gives children and young people the opportunity to explore the wilderness, play games, join in with a group of friends, climb trees, build dens, have exciting imaginative adventure, create secret hiding places, which they have to jump/crawl/roll/squeeze into…and that’s not all!… Read on…
Play England made this short film Fort Apache Adventure Playground to show how an adventure playground can give children the freedom to play creatively in ways which may not be possible elsewhere in their neighbourhoods. It was filmed at Fort Apache Adventure Playgound near Torbay.
This five-minute video features interviews with staff, volunteers, street wardens and the children themselves. It shows how staffed play provision can provide unique opportunities for children to play and develop, right on their doorsteps.
This film was produced by Mark Lister, Senior Programme Development Officer at Play England.
Fort Apache was open for play on the 9th March 2011 for more information please see the flyer
