Quest Builder 2016 – The full story!

Children and young people aged 8-25, were invited to get involved in Quest Builder 2016, working with artists and producers to devise creative, interactive promenade quest performances in three different cultural venues in South Devon.  Are you ready?

The Quest performances were designed by children and young people and their creative team to delight and inform family audiences about the history of three historic cultural venues in new and playful ways: Sharpham Estate, Torre Abbey and Paignton Zoo.

Working with experienced professional artists, theatre practitioners and musicians, 45 children and young people signed up to become Quest Builders and benefited from creative support and mentoring, developing their skills for the future. All those involved in the project were be encouraged to achieve their Arts Award at Explorer, Bronze, Silver or Gold level (from Trinity College, London) which they are currently completing.

All Quest Builders took part in regular devising sessions, rehearsals and workshops. We were fortunate to have the fantastic Le Navet Bete, a touring physical comedy theatre company based in Exeter, an exceptional group which creates physical and comedy theatre using creative and engaging storytelling. Here is a taste of that workshop weekend:

Quest 1: Sharpham Trust

Over 250 years old, and still very much a mystery! Sharpham and Capability Brown, the famous landscape designer said to have created its wonderful grounds, needed help… After watching over his work at Sharpham, his presence seems to be missing as some strange occurrence sweeps through the landscape. With trees dying, bamboo fences disappearing and the mystery that was the eerie presence of a DRAMON, this quest was brought to live to discover the facts and save Sharpham!  A short clip of music rehearsal with Hugh Nankivell:

Quest 2: Torre Abbey

Help was needed at the Spanish Barn in Torre Abbey… who is this female rambling sailor ghost? Who murdered her? A news flash on a screen in the Barn told Questers about a series of murders at Torre Abbey. Could they help solve the multiple murder mysteries… ? Would the female rambling soldier ghost ever be free? Would the intrepid Quest Busters get the help they needed?

Quest 3: Paignton Zoo

The founder of Paignton Zoo, Herbert Whitley, had lost his most treasured creation: the Blue Chicken! Where was it…? Why did we keep finding blue feathers scattered around the Zoo? And could we trust this rather strange Crocodile Dundee character, looking out for a nasty poacher? Could the Questers unmask the poacher, create a brand new species of animal AND make a difference when it comes to saving endangered species in our planet…?
